Areas of application

• Neuropathic pain: Treatment of long-lasting pain caused by nerve damage (peripheral and central neuropathic pain), for example caused by diabetes (diabetic neuropathy) or shingles (postherpetic neuralgia).
• Epilepsy: As an adjunct therapy for a specific form of epilepsy in adulthood (partial seizures with or without secondary generalization) when current treatment is not sufficiently effective.
• Generalized anxiety disorder: Treatment of persistent, difficult-to-treat states of anxiety and worry (generalized anxiety disorder) that may be accompanied by symptoms such as restlessness, tension, fatigue, difficulty concentrating, and sleep disturbances. 

Important instructions

• Prescription only: This medicine may only be taken on the advice of a doctor.
• Dosage: The usual daily dose is between 150 mg and 600 mg, divided into two or three doses per day. Your doctor will determine the appropriate dose for you.
• Side effects: Very common side effects include dizziness, drowsiness, and headache. Other common side effects may include increased appetite, confusion, irritability, blurred vision, weight gain, dry mouth, and edema (swelling).
• Discontinuation: The medication must not be stopped abruptly, but must be tapered off gradually over at least one week to avoid withdrawal symptoms such as sleep disturbances, nausea or seizures.
• Ability to drive and operate machinery: This medication can cause drowsiness and dizziness, thus impairing your reaction time. You should not perform potentially hazardous activities until you know how you react to this medication.
• Interactions: Alcohol consumption is discouraged during treatment, as it can intensify side effects.
